We are returning to Sutton Road, Cookham to complete the next phase of works to upgrade the ageing gas pipes in the area, from 30 March to 12 April 2026 over the school Easter holidays.
Last year, we started this project but in consultation with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council and Buckinghamshire Council, we agreed to complete this section of work at a later date.
There will be a complete road closure and no through access along Sutton Road from St George’s Lodge to Odney Lane past Churchgate.
Access will be maintained for all businesses and residents however, this will be via the Cookham Bridge, as these is no through access along Sutton Road during our road closure.
We will be working seven days a week to complete this work as safely and quickly as possible. We appreciate we will be working over the Easter Bank holiday weekend, we promise we won’t be doing any noisy work on Easter Sunday.
Some pavements will be closed with alternative routes in place as applicable.
Stuart Donaldson, Head of Investment Delivery explained, Over the years, there have been multiple repairs on these gas mains, resulting in extensive traffic management measures each time. These frequent repairs have significantly disrupted the road, road users and the community.
After significant discussions with the local council and highways authority, we have developed this project to upgrade the gas pipe.
We are completing this work, with agreement with the council and Highways Authority during the Easter holidays when the traffic flows are reduced.
While this project will temporarily affect the area, it is designed to eliminate the need for recurrent repairs, thereby reducing traffic congestion and disruption.
Ultimately, this proactive approach will enhance the reliability of our gas network and ensure that we can keep our customers safe and warm long into the future.
The diversion for the Sutton Road closure is A4094 Sutton Road, Cookham from the northern boundary of Sutton Road Car Park northward to Borough Boundary and along that part of A4094 Ferry Lane, Bourne End from its junction with Borough Boundary northward.
The alternative route for vehicles is via the A4094 Ferry Lane, A4094 Hedsor Road, A4094 Station Road, A4155 The Parade, A4155 Marlow Road, A404, A4 Bath Road, A4 Castle Hill, A4 Bad Godesberg Way, A4 St Cloud Way, A4 Bridge Road, A4094 Ray Mead Road, A4094 Lower Cookham Road and A4094 Sutton Road.
N.B. Cookham Bridge closed to through traffic, but access will be granted for residents and visitors northbound of the closure. No access onto Sutton Road from the bridge southbound.
Got a question:

Working hours: Hours will vary due to engineering operations but will be within 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.
There will be a rolling road closure on High Road, Cookham from Lower Road to Whyteladyes Lane. Access is available to all residents.
Phase 1 - 30/03/26 – 12/04/26
Closure between Lower Road and Crook Cottage
Phase 2 - 04/05/26 – 17/05/26
Closure between Worster Road and Halldore Hill
Phase 3 - 18/05/26 – 31/05/26
Closure between Halldore Hill and Whyteladyes Lane

Homes, schools, hospitals and other buildings use gas for heat, cooking and hot water, some of the region’s biggest industries need it to power production processes.
These upgrades also mean big environmental gains for the region, as it reduces methane emissions and enables a move to more renewable gases like biomethane. This is essential for a cleaner future - the UK will need energy to come from a range of sources to meet demand and be sustainable.
The work is part of a 30‑year national gas mains replacement programme, which began in 2002. Each year, Cadent replaces around 1.5 per cent of the 20,000 kilometres of gas pipes that make up the North London network, most of which are located beneath roads and pavements.
Our work to replace ageing gas mains is a major engineering project, which we’ve planned carefully with the local authority and where possible, we’ll use innovative methods and technology to minimise disruption and reduce the time taken to do this work.
We are working extended hours but not 24hrs. We do not want to disturb people at night when they are sleeping.
We need to carry out our work during the day as we need access to properties to upgrade their gas service (that’s the smaller pipe that connects gas to their property). When we do this, we need to turn off their gas supply temporarily, test their gas appliances and turn their gas back on.
We’ve notified the bus companies of our works and plans are in place for buses to follow the diversions. Bus stop suspensions will be in place during the final phase of works.
This is a common question we encounter; we’ve contacted the refuse companies to advise them of our work and we’ll work closely with them to ensure collections take place as normal on the dedicated day each week.
There may be times when the team isn’t visible on site during the allotted hours. Although it may appear that no one is working at the site itself, they’ll be working in surrounding roads to insert pipes, make connections and to carry out testing, as well as allow for concrete curing. It is only once we are satisfied that the new pipe is safely supplying gas to customers that we can fill in the holes and tidy up.
Should the need arise, emergency vehicles will need to follow the short diversions.
Yes, we will maintain access to properties during road closures.
Yes, we will endeavour to keep footpaths open as the majority of our pipes are in the carriageway
Yes, HGV’s will need to follow the signposted diversions.
