    • Gas pipe upgrade will help ensure a reliable gas supply for decades to come
    • Road closure at the junction of Rochdale Road, Elizabethan Way and Bridge Street with diversions in place
    • Work begins Monday 28 July and is expected to last four weeks

Work is set to begin on Monday 28 July at the junction of Rochdale Road (A640), Elizabethan Way (A640) and Bridge Street (B6225), Rochdale, as engineers from Cadent, the gas distribution network for area, begin replacing an ageing section of gas pipeline.

The work will take place over the school holidays to minimise disruption and is expected to last four weeks.

The project involves decommissioning a 90m-long metallic pipe, originally installed in the 1950s, and replacing it with durable new polyethylene pipes designed to last for decades and support a greener energy future.

To carry out the work safely, there will be a four-way road closure at the junction of Rochdale Road (A640), Elizabethan Way (A640) and Bridge Street (B6225). Access will be made available to residents, but diversion routes will be in place for other motorists.

Paula Steer, Director of the North West Network at Cadent, said: We have a responsibility to ensure residents have access to a safe and reliable gas supply - 24/7, 365 days a year.

This includes upgrading pipelines that are reaching the natural end of their working life, like the one under the junction.

These upgrades also mean big environmental gains, as it reduces methane emissions and enables a move to more renewable gases like biomethane. This is essential for a cleaner future – the UK will need energy to come from a range of sources to meet demand and be sustainable.

Due to the nature of the work, there may be short periods when the gas supply is interrupted for properties within the work parameters. If your supply is affected, our team will contact you directly. In most cases, gas is restored the same day.

If you smell gas, day or night, call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999*. Do not assume it’s related to this work, it may not be and must be checked.

    Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
