    Residents and business owners in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, are set to benefit from essential upgrades by Cadent, the UK’s largest gas distribution network, to help prepare the local gas network for the future.

    The project will see 400 metres of gas pipe, originally laid in 1960, replaced with modern plastic pipes that will keep gas flowing safely and reliably for decades to come.

    Work started on Monday 27 July and is expected to last for six weeks, with completion currently scheduled for Monday 7 September.

    To keep engineers and road users safe while the upgrade is completed, traffic management will be needed in a number of phases:

    • Phase 1 will involve a road closure on Saunders Piece from the junction of Preston Close to the junction of Queens Road.
    • Phase 2 will take place on Brinsmade Road.
    • Phase 3 will involve a road closure on Saunders Piece from the junction of Queens Road to the junction of Lea Road.
    • Phase 4 will involve a road closure on Queens Road at the junction with Oliver Street.
    • Phase 5 will involve a road closure on Oliver Street from the junction of Queens Road to the junction of Houghton Close. Work could also affect Chiltern Close.

    Cadent will work to complete the scheme as safely and efficiently as possible.

    The project is part of Cadent’s ongoing programme to upgrade ageing gas mains across the East of England, helping to future-proof the network and reduce the need for future repairs.

    Gas stays ON for the duration of work. The only interruption to supply will be to properties that take a direct feed from the pipes being replaced. Supply to these properties will be disconnected for a short while, as the property gets connected onto the new pipe. Advance notice will be given, and more information will be provided to these properties. 

    If you smell gas, always ring the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999*, day or night. Do not assume it is related to this work; it may not be and needs to be checked.
