A major scheme to replace ageing gas mains in historic Bury St Edmunds recently got underway.
Cadent is carrying out essential work in St Andrew’s Street South, Bury St Edmunds, to replace the old gas mains with tough new pipes which should last for many decades, keeping local homes, businesses and community facilities connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
Work has started in St Andrew’s Street South at the junction with Risbeygate Street and will continue to the end of the road where it merges with Parkway.
To enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently traffic management is being used – this includes the use of multi-directional traffic lights, partial lane and road closures.
The project is being delivered in two phases and traffic management will vary according to what is required for each phase.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Vince Doggett said: We’ve carefully planned our work to ensure that it’s delivered with as little disruption as possible.
Our preparations have included close discussions with the local authorities and carrying out ground surveys to come up with the best plan possible to deliver this essential work.
He added: We’ll also insert the new pipes into the old gas mains where possible which reduces the need for large excavations and minimises disruption.
Our project will help ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas for cooking and heating – another chapter in Bury St Edmunds long and eventful history.
