    • Cadent is investing in the local gas network by replacing around 750 metres of ageing gas main on the A49 near Bridge Farm as part of its ongoing Mains Replacement Programme, upgrading infrastructure that has served the local community for more than 60 years

A gas main that has supplied homes and businesses in Shropshire for more than 60 years is set to be replaced as part of a major investment in the local gas network.

Cadent will begin work on Monday 26 October to replace around 750 metres of ageing gas pipe on the A49, starting at Bridge Farm and continuing approximately 750 metres northbound.

The existing metal gas main has been serving local communities since the 1960s and has quietly delivered gas to homes and businesses across three generations.

As part of Cadent's ongoing Mains Replacement Programme, the 750-metre stretch of pipe will now be upgraded with modern plastic pipework designed to keep the network safe, reliable and fit for the future.

The replacement forms part of a nationwide programme to modernise older sections of the gas network. Once complete, the new pipe will continue supplying customers for decades to come while reducing the need for future maintenance.

To carry out the work safely, temporary two-way traffic lights will be used along the route as the project progresses. The works are expected to take place between 26 October and 20 November, with a planned pause from 9 to 13 November while another utility company undertakes separate works in the area. Weekend working will also be utilised where possible to help reduce the overall duration of the project.

Customers' gas supplies will not be affected during the works.

Phil Carmichael, Head of Operations at Cadent said: The gas main we're replacing has served local communities for more than 60 years, meaning it has provided gas to generations of families, businesses and customers throughout its lifetime.

Our engineers will be replacing around 750 metres of this ageing pipe as part of our ongoing investment in a safe and reliable gas network. While most people never see the infrastructure beneath their feet, it plays a vital role in everyday life.

By replacing older metal pipes with modern plastic alternatives, we're helping ensure the network continues to serve local communities for many years to come.

We appreciate this work may cause some disruption for people travelling through the area, and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience while we complete these essential upgrades as quickly and safely as possible.

Access for residents, businesses and landowners will be maintained throughout the scheme wherever possible.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
