Engineers from Cadent – the UK’s largest gas distribution network – are continuing essential work in Hitchin to reinforce the local gas network, helping to keep gas supplies safe and reliable for years to come.
Cadent is reinforcing more than 400 metres of gas pipe in the area through a phased programme that is expected to be completed by early November.
The project is part of a £123million investment this year, which will see more than 395km of pipes upgraded across the East of England.
Cadent is carrying out the essential work in phases, with traffic management in place to keep engineers, residents and road users safe.
The first phase of work in Stotfold Road and Grovelands Avenue has progressed well, with traffic lights being used to manage traffic safely. This phase is scheduled for completion by 9 October.
Once the first phase is complete, the second phase will begin in Harkness Road. To allow the work to be completed safely, Harkness Road will need to close while this phase is under way.
A signed diversion route will be in place during the road closure, while access will remain open for residents. All work is expected to be completed by early November.
Eleanor Buxton, Head of Work Management at Cadent, said: The pipes in this part of Hitchin have served the community for many years. This reinforcement work will help us continue delivering gas safely and reliably to local homes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The work is progressing well, and we will continue to do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum as we move into the next phase.
We are very conscious of the disruption works like this cause and hope people understand this project is essential to maintain a long-term safe gas supply.
Gas supplies will remain on for the duration of the work. If any temporary interruption is required, affected properties will be given advance notice and further information.
