    • Local gas mains network being upgraded in Sandy Road, Potton
    • Work will be delivered in phases and a convoy traffic control system implemented to enable work to be carried out safely
    • Projects will help ensure local community keeps on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating

Work is getting underway on an essential upgrade to the local gas network in Sandy Road, Potton.

Today (Monday 24 August) engineers start work on the project which is necessary to help ensure local residents keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating. Work is expected to continue until early 2021.

To enable the work to be carried out safely a convoy system of traffic management will be implemented during working hours (10 hours a day, six days a week). This will involve a project vehicle leading traffic past work sites one direction at a time. Outside of working hours traffic will be managed by temporary automatic traffic lights. This system has been chosen to try and limit disruption and maintain traffic flows as best as possible.

To further ease disruption and limit congestion the work will be delivered in phases. The project has also been carefully planned in close discussion with Central Bedfordshire Council with engineers carrying out detailed ground surveys to ensure the best possible route and work methods are utilised. Minimal dig technology will be used wherever possible, though sometimes open cut trenches will need to be dug.

Gas supplies will be maintained throughout the work, no access will be required to properties and local shops and businesses will remain open as normal.

Dilbir Chana, Cadent Authorising Engineer, said: This essential project will help ensure people in Potton keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.

We’ve carefully designed the project to ensure we deliver our work  as promptly as possible and with minimal inconvenience to the local community and road users.

    Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
