    Carbon monoxide (CO) awareness

    Carbon monoxide awareness

Raising awareness of carbon monoxide (CO) is a primary focus for us.

Alongside the work we do to increase awareness, we collaborate with organisations who work with different age groups and needs to ensure the information is tailored and accessible. This includes our CO education programme for primary schools and working with the Fire and Rescue Services who promote these safety messages through their safety visits.

We’re working to educate healthcare professionals through a number of eLearning modules to help a broad range of health and social care staff better understand the harm caused by exposure to CO, how to identify those at risk and protect them from harm.

Our CO ecosystem, launched in June 2024, brings together utility companies, charities, and businesses outside of our sector, to share their CO data and build a data platform to create a valuable, user-friendly tool for all. The data it provides will help us shape our approach to CO in the future.

CO alarms given to customers living in vulnerable situations in RIIO-2

We’ll continue to raise awareness of the dangers through several innovative programmes, and intervene to reduce the risks from, this colourless, odourless toxic gas that can escape from poorly maintained flues and appliances.

    In RIIO-2 we will:

    • Provide up to 500,000 free CO alarms to customers living in vulnerable situations and without the means to buy their own through our VCMA partnership organisations

We distributed 506,308 CO alarms to customers living in vulnerable situations. Exceeding our target by 6,308.

    • Lead nationwide education and awareness campaigns helping millions of customers reduce their risk of harm.

During RIIO-2 we reached 7.7m customers directly to raise awareness of CO, With a further 19m reached though multi-channel campaigns.

    • Educate 400,000 of those most at risk to the dangers of CO.

Our CO education programmes reached a total of 635,721 children between April 2021 and March 2026. Exceeding our target by 235,721.
